Confessions and advice by those suffering from depression

Depression Post #12 - by Anonymous

How do parents deal with the college process? I’m not sure who is more depressed, me or my daughter. The selection of schools, the application, essay, SAT scores, recommendations, and school tours has become a lightening rod in our house. I’m not sure it has brought about depression but I can see my daughter’s frustration leading up to something that has changed her behavior. She is frustrated, anxious, and for the first time, I think she is looking for comfort that she feels can only come from drugs. My husband and I have questioned her about the changes in her behavior which starts a fire that usually ends up with her leaving the house where she finds her comfort.

I know that every parent who has a child that wants to attend college goes through an arduous task. It’s neither easy on the parent nor on the child but how do you help your child understand that drugs will not make the process go any easier. Our major fear is that she will either opt out of the college process or take the addiction with her to college where she will be left to her own devices? Has anyone had a similar experience?
